Pictures of the complete casa, garage & rainwater tank storage facility

Yay, Jan finished the house, garage, rainwater tank storage area & retaining walls, so here they are!

And for those of you needing more technical detail or need some ideas on how we will do our garage, gabions, and rainwater collection system, check out these graphics:

Very nice 3D model. I think the gabion walls really help make this a cohesive whole.

Good luck on the financing. Certainly construction loan rates should be coming down, although 30 year mortgage rates may climb a bit from here.

We abandoned the idea of building our own when we ran across a territorial style re-sale in New Mexico. Rammed earth walls, metal roof, passive solar design, and a large grey water system on 2.5 acres for a fraction of our previous construction budget.

Hey Bob! I was wondering where you went. Too bad about you building your own, but the resale sounds great! Rammed earth walls sound very cozy and perfect for the desert climate. Those can't work in our area due to the small temperature changes from night and day here. Please do take some pics and post, I'd love to see them!

In fact, we are driving to Santa Fe this weekend for a much needed getaway... I can't wait to look at art and those charming adobe homes. Any suggestions? We are going from El Paso up to Santa Fe and back south.

Hmmm. I gather you are flying to El Paso and taking a rental car from there. I would ask the rental counter person for directions to trans-mountain. This route is both more scenic and quicker than taking I-10. Trans-mountain hooks back up to I-10 after it is out-of-town. You may even see huge fields of California poppies, although it may be past the time for those.

Beautiful blog! I wish I was building a new home instead of buying an old one. I'm going to try my best to make our super inefficient home efficient. I work for a consulting company who designs LEED buildings across the country. I make energy models that commercial buildings are required to have to be LEED certified.

Good luck on everything! I'll be reading!

Thanks! I am glad you're finding my blog useful and fun to see. I hope to make our home a "model" of the future of building. We are also considering being LEED certified, but it costs several thousands to do. We'll see if we have any money left in our budget :-).

I envy your climate! Lived in Mexico for 20+ years but I retired in a coooold Canadian province.

Building new is too expensive, but people shouldn't get discouraged from going green by the high cost of new construction.

I'm gutting an old house that I got for $10,000 - and spending $40,000 to make it almost 100% green, including rainwater harvesting. You can't do much better than that! My house will be all paid for.

What I save I will use for wintering in a warm climate!
